Comedy with a conscience. A laugh-out-loud mashup of romantic comedy, crime fiction, and satire Dorothy Parker meets Dorothy L. Sayers. Perennially down-and-out socialite Camilla Randall a.k.a. "The Manners Doctor" is a magnet for murder, mayhem and Mr. Wrong, but she always solves the mystery in her quirky, but oh-so-polite way. Usually with more than a little help from her gay best friend, Plantagenet Smith.
Doria Windsor, the uber-rich editor of Home decorating magazine loses everything, including her Ponzi-schemer husband, when their luxury wine-country home mysteriously goes up in flames. Homeless, destitute, presumed dead and branded a criminal, 59-yr-old Doria has a crash course in reality…and a second chance at love.
Meanwhile, reluctant sleuth Camilla Randall is facing homelessness too, as Doria's husband's schemes unravel and take down innocent bystanders along the way. When the mysterious—and dangerously attractive—Mr. X. turns up at Camilla's bookstore looking for clues to the death of a missing homeless man, Camilla joins in the search.
With the help of brave trio of homeless people and a little dog named Toto, Doria, Camilla and Mr. X journey to unmask the real killer and reveal the dark secrets of Doria's "financial wizard" husband.
Anne. R. Allen weaves her usual blend of archetypal images (this time from The Wizard of Oz) with unique and wacky characters, hilarious situations, and laugh-out-loud one-liners that all somehow come together and make perfect sense at the end.
No Place Like Home is the fourth of the Camilla Randall Mysteries, but can be read as a stand-alone novel.
"Snarky, quirky, and hilarious!"
"A warp-speed, lighthearted comedy mystery, No Place Like Home offers lasting laughs beneath which a message resounds – Being homeless is scary"
"Don't miss this wild and wacky ride from the gorgeous Morro Bay and the Edna Valley wineries to the Big Sur coastline. It's a real hoot!"
"Allen's genius comes through as she opens a window on the world of the homeless showing the reader a sensitivity toward these people who have lost everything, often through no fault of their own."

This was a well-written mystery with interesting, somewhat quirky, characters and a small dose of snark. I don't agree with the blurb's description of it as "hilarious," but it does contain some good old-fashioned wit and a lot of rather absurd situational humor. The "mystery" wasn't difficult to figure out, but there were more than enough twists and turns to keep it interesting. However, I did have a teensy bit of difficulty swallowing the premise of a woman being unceremoniously tossed out of the hospital and abandoned on the street shortly after undergoing surgery. I mean, after she'd already had the surgery, regardless of her financial status at that point, it seems unlikely that any hospital would throw her out the door while she's still sporting actively bleeding abdominal drains. Talk about liability! But I could be wrong...
At any rate, this is an enjoyable read, and it's both fast-reading and entertaining. The ending struck me as a bit abrupt and left some loose ends flopping in the wind, but as part of a series, I suspect that was intentional.

No Place Like Home The Camilla Randall Mysteries Book edition by Anne R Allen Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Doria has the life we read about in the gossip rags. Dressed to impress, hair always in place, a home to die for... or maybe not so much. Doria's home, along with her husband, has gone up in flames and she is the prime suspect in the arson. Alone, hiding from the police and penniless, Doria is finding out life isn't always a bed of roses, or in her case a bed in the cosmetic surgical suite of the local hospital. No things aren't looking good for Doria, but underneath it all she may be made of stuff we don't expect in the uber rich, the will to survive, florish and prosper no matter what the circumstances.
Camilla is also alone and on the run. But in her case it is from romance gone bad and life turned sour. As she works to start her new life in a local bookstore along the warm coast she finds herself living a life far from the romance and bustle of the city. As Camilla attempts to adapt to her new world, she begins to believe she may, once again, have a life with an interesting man in it. But then again, men who are interesting tend to have complex backgrounds and she may have found one with a background that is less impressive than she had hoped.
Silas and Planatagent, erstwhile bookstore owners, former actors of fame and fortune, a quirky homeless man hiding his own past and the rich and fabulous all ready to Co mingle on the pages of this witty laugh-out-loud novel that reads like a sitcom gone right. Very funny and easy to read I couldn't put it down until I had read every last word.

Not much mystery really. Is she dead, is he???? At least four characters were in the dead? Category. Then the story flipped back and forth between two characters view points one chapter each, which was very distracting to me. The writing and editing were fine and I finished the book but...... Thought the "rich" business women obsessing about being homeless was a little much--at most it was do I have someplace for tonight as opposed to the real homeless in the camp. I found that pretty unbelievable and improbable. Take away that and there's not a whole lot left to solve.
I enjoyed the parallelism between the two women who both had been wealthy and had descended into the realm of the rest of us...both nearly to homelessness.
All of the characters added to the story and were interesting. Could have lived without the references to alternative lifestyles--transgenderism and homosexuality but they were handled with aplomb.
It wasn't difficult to figure out who the villain was, but he will remain nameless here.
There wasn't one "strong" character who could solve all of his/her own problems. It was the interactions and relationships of the characters that wove the story to its solution.
As a writer and reader, I've great admiration for Anne R. Allen. She's perfectly at home with comedy as she is with drama and suspense. And "No Place Like Home," her latest novel in the Camilla Randall Mystery series, is no exception. In a word, it's perfect. A perfect blend of wild and wacky characters spouting hilarious dialogue while finding themselves in unpredictable and unexpected situations. And here's the best part Each of the Camilla Randall novels can be read as stand alones (but I bet after reading this entertaining romp thru the California Central Coast, you'll want to read them all.) So don't miss this wild and wacky ride from the gorgeous Morro Bay and the Edna Valley wineries to the Big Sur coastline. It's a real hoot.
I love this book. The two storylines of Camilla and Doria were compelling. I listened to the audio version and found I couldn't wait each day to get back into the story. Fun, captivating characters, brilliant writing, a book to savor more than once. I will read this one again, as I have both audio and ebook. The plot is complex and the characters so engaging it is one book to cherish. I have also read Ghost Writers in the Sky and loved it. Some of the familar characters in the first book are here as well to help Camilla Plantagenent, Silas and the hilarious Marva. Ms. Allen is a talented writer. I plan to continue with the rest of the series.
